This time – in the afternoon of December 17 – the villages of Tehulale and Tala, both not far from Kairatu on the South coast of the island of Ceram, had a severe clash, resulting in one person being killed by a homemade grenade.

SANANA, Sula Islands, North Moluccas: The muslim villages of Falahu and Waibau, near the town of Sanana, recently had a nasty clash, resulting in five people being seriously injured, whereas several dozen others suffered minor injuries.

EARTHQUAKE – Antara News Agency reports that a tectonic quake measuring 6.8 on the Richter Scale rocked the tiny island of Kelang to the West of Ceram, Central Moluccas, in the morning of January 29, causing a tidal wave to attack Namlea, capital of the district Buru Island. However no damage to people’s houses was reported neither any victims. The island of Kelang is unhabitated.

FATAL EXPLOSION – An explosion in the hamlet of Tawiri, island of Ambon, killed taxi-driver Constantinus S.Lumaresil last January 23. Initially it was thought to be a homemade grenade that had exploded unintentionally, but it turned out to be the taxi air conditioning gas tube, which exploded while being refilled. Thus was stated by the police.

VICTIMS RABIES – It has been several months since we last heard of rabies in Ambon. Now there are again victims of this deadly disease. Between January 12 and 17, three people, who had been bitten by dogs two or three months earlier, died in Dr. Haulussy hospital, Kudamti, Ambon.

1. RMS SEPARATISTS SENTENCED – On January 12, 2004, nine Moluccan RMS (Independent South Maluku Republic) activists were sentenced to between 30 months and 15 years in jail by the Ambon District Court.

1. WEAPONRY SEIZED – Local newspaper Ambon Ekspres quoted the commander of TNI (Military) task force Arhanudse 11, Lieut. Col. Haris Sarjana, saying that security apparatus seized dozens of homemade weapons, bombs and ammunition from communities on 26 December 2003.
He also said that until 26 December, TNI has seized 84 handmade weapons from the communities.

1. PRESIDENTIAL VISIT CANCELED – President Megawati Soekarnoputri, who had earlier favourably answered to an invitation to come to Ambon on December 28, canceled this visit “for security reasons." It would have been her first official visit to the Moluccas since she assumed office two years ago.

Op 22 augustus ben ik naar het "Hart van Seram" gegaan Desa Manusa, daerah Nunusaku, het land van onze voorouders. Ik kreeg de drang om daar naar toe te gaan toen ik op maandag 18 augustus de dominee van Manusa sprak, die in Ambon was gekomen om hulp te vragen voor de kerk, welke door erosie is vernield, maar dat niet alleen.

A CRY FOR HELP – On Masariku network we read the following “Desperate cry for help from Ambon”:
Since April 25th houses and public facilities in Ambon, capital of the province of the Moluccas, including schools and University campuses are being burnt down.
Bombs and other explosives are being directed to the living quarters of the civilians.
